Greener Engineer

For L.C. Smith College of Engineering’s bi-annual magazine Engineer stressdesign worked closely with University Publications and vendors to help our client produce a more environmentally responsible magazine. “We had always been mindful of environmental concerns,” says Trish Hopkins Director of Marketing, “but we needed to increase our leadership role moving forward. Stressdesign was instrumental in making this a reality for us.”
In its third year of publication Engineer magazine had always used FSC certified papers, and made responsible distribution choices like drop-shipping from print house. As part of a design update, a more careful consideration for the environment was also made. “We worked closely with University Publications Office, Mohwak Papers and Monroe Litho to publish a magazine with 100% wind powered energy. All production, paper, printing, bindery and finishing were powered by renewable wind energy,” says Stress. Wind Power Logo was used to indicate use of wind energy.
“In addition to meeting a University mandate it’s just the right thing to do,” says Hopkins, “this publication is very important to the College and our Alumni, and we’re proud to be making a positive environmental impact.”
By taking advantage of responsible production techniques we were able to help L.C. Smith reach the some important environmental savings, including 9,434 lbs Net greenhouse gases prevented, 102 Trees Preserved for the future, 43,303 Gallons wastewater flow saved, 17 Barrels of crude unused. Thanks to working with Mohawk Papers, we were able to calculate the environmental impact online.
“Many colleges and universities are doing a lot through their physical plant to manage energy consumption and waste.” says Laura Shore, Senior Vice President of Communications at Mohawk Fine Papers “What’s exciting to me, is when the communications departments contribute in their own way.” Shore continues, “Specifying environmental papers and printers not only reduces landfill impacts, but creates a market for recycled papers and alternative energy. By publicizing your commitment you also lead by example and create a path that others can follow.”
