Making URLs Work

It all started innocently back in the early nineties. Sharing URLs was so easy, links typically maxed out around 15 characters and rarely had more than one directory of depth, unless you were in Academia. Then came web applications and the length of URLs skyrockets such that today, it’s not uncommon to have a generated URL with upwards of 200 characters. Copying and pasting is problematic as links frequently break on lines and become inaccurate and unusable. Forget about trying to type some of these in on a mobile device. Naming’s Secret Weapon

We love naming things here at stressdesign. We’ve named companies, and products, and services over our past 8 years. Naming is always a fun exercise but it can be time consuming. Let’s suppose I told you you could get a world-tested name for about $99. What if I told you it was for exactly $99? The giant brains over at Kluster have done some more social engineering and come up with their latest digital product. NameThis. Get 3 names in 48 hours for 99 bucks. A pretty good deal if you ask us, and great way to get a new product, company or service off a napkin and into the wild.

Deep in The Heart

We’ve been working with some folks in San Antonio for a couple of months, on some projects which will launch in early Q2. The fine people over at TexasDesign were kind enough to list us on their creative resource website.

TexasDesign.com is a resource for graphic designers, art directors, illustrators, photographers, printers, and others involved in the business of graphic design. The site was originally launched in 1998 as a portal and was a finalist in the SXSW web design competition. Since then, the web site has gone through many transformations, but has always served the design community.

Thanks to Dan Sturdivant for his help in getting us listed on the site.

Trademark Design

Anyone who’s ever been involved in the development of a new trademark or logo will tell you it’s a challenging task. At the outset, the development of a new logo frequently seems like it will be clean, clear path from concept to production. The optimism that the logo will ever appear as hundreds—perhaps thousands— of variations evolve can be difficult to maintain. (more…)

Brand Gap >> Zap

We’ve been pretty big fans of The Brand Gap since it first hit the shelves in January 2003. We’ve read the book, and when AIGA brought The Brand Gap workshop to the Upstate New York chapter in 2004, we were one of the first firms inline to see this information presented by the author. We just learned — like just in the last 30 seconds — that Mr. Neumeier has a followup to his widely acclaimed first book titled Zag. The new book promises to answer the question of how to build a relevant brand in a crowded market. We can’t wait for August, 15. Yeah, we’re total geeks for this stuff.

What Design Does

There’s an article by Jennifer Reingold at Fast Company that my friend told me about entitled The Interpreter. Part informational, and part interview with Proctor+Gamble VP Claudia Kotchka, the article examines the effect design has on a visceral level and how the smartest companies use design to create and maintain markets for their products and services.
Though the article discusses mostly how product and retail design can effect an individuals’ day-to-day experiences through the things we buy and use, the tenants hold true for all design practice area.
